Not many games come across as art to me, but this one truly does. As someone who has lost a parent at a young age, this game very much encapsulates what it is like to deal with the pain of death and the emotions that come along with it. Also less cashgrab games, more games like this.

I did not play the game, I did not know most of the story. But this scene was so powerful that I can't help myself but shed a tear and feel the emotions washing over me. At that point, I finally understood what it was all about.

Just when you think that everything is going to end there in the shadows, a different voice than gris starts to show itself, almost as if saying "I'm not going anywhere, I'll always be with you" And then gris gets up and sings along with her mother while the colors come back (for me gris was wanting to show everything she went through and overcame) simply beautiful

The part when she kisses her mom and finally says goodbye had me in shambles. What a beautiful game.

My interpretation is that Gris lost her mother to suicide. I understood this for a few reasons: the song in the beginning is called “Mae” which is Portuguese for “mother.” In the last cut scene where “acceptance” is achieved, her mother (the statue) is seen dead on a pedestal, regaining its color and flowers. In the cut scene where we see Gris’ mother with a younger gris showing her the stars, she smiles at Gris, but for a moment her mother looks the other way with a sad look on her face and Gris notices. She shows Gris the stars, which I think represent the memories Gris has of her mother. These memories help her navigate her broken world, and help her connect the pieces. It’s almost like her mother knew she would need them someday. In the beginning, Gris lost her voice just as her mother was falling apart; they used to sing to each other. I think the singing represents connection and communication. Gris loses her voice meaning her mother had been going through so much pain that in a desperate attempt to end it, she could not hear her own daughter calling to her to stay. The black miasma is Gris’ grief, changing and shifting which represents the ability of grief to both pull us under (the black eels), to throw us around (the black birds), to help us gain the resolve to try to bring us back to reality (the turtle) and sometimes even forcing us to confront the darkest parts hidden inside us (when the miasma becomes Gris). Grief is powerful. But by continuing to walk through this now shattered world, consciously pulling things together, rebuilding and recoloring her world, she makes decisions to ultimately understand her mother, forgive what she had done and ultimately connect with her again, despite her own pain of losing her to herself. She chose to face her pain and her inner demons that climbed to the surface, instead of getting lost and drowned in them. So to me Gris represents hope. Even in the description of the game, Gris is called “a hopeful girl.” In the this scene, Gris connected to her memories of her mother and she accepted her loss. When she kissed her mother goodbye with a smile, she chose to remember her mother by who she was, not by her depression or pain or her death by suicide. With that loving memory of her mother now intact, she was finally able to leave this world, which represents her return to reality. Her mother seemed to have said “now move on from this place. I’ll always be here. It’s time for you to return home.” It’s heartbreakingly beautiful.

My younger brother-who's also a competitive gamer-didn't like Gris, calling it nothing but "a fancy walking simulator." I understand that to some, that's all Gris is to them. But thinking about it that way made me really mad. Not only is the art and music lovely, but the puzzle aspects are so creative and the story is so beautifully written, even without dialogue. I've grieved many friends, lost both to death and to growing emotionally distant. I can resonate with this story in too many ways just to think of it as a walking simulator. It truly is a piece of art that any human being who has experienced grief can relate to, no matter the age, race, or cultural background. Not many games can do that.

I dont know why as I just see like 1 vid of this game and this is the second vid, and I cried all the suddent when she is singing and the sea start to drown her but she didnt stop singing. Like my brain didnt even understand why I cry but tears were like I falling dont care of u ỌAO

My mother just passed away and I don't know why, but I had the urge to play this game for the first time. Thought this was some little indie game with colors. But after I Red the line "acceptance" I knew what this is all about. This ending scene broke me completely. Mother where ever you will be right now, you will be missed and most importantly loved.

This is everything to me. Nothing makes me cry like this game does.

The last scene had me more broken than Gris's mother \

i realized something. it can be meaningless but she escaped that BLACK nightmare who represent: grief i guess and she get rid of it somehow. they proceed to end the game with bright WHITE screen but actually the game finished with black screen 6:47 which means with that negative BLACK thing. worth to think about.

When I first played this game it was a real punch to the gut watching her slowly pull herself back together and heal, just like I’ve been doing since my depression and PTSD diagnoses. Even a couple years after my first play through it’s still immensely emotional for me as I go through the highs and lows of healing. It still gives me a kind of hope though, hope that one day I’ll truly be ok.
